Your First Session

Taking This Step Takes Courage

Starting therapy can bring up a mix of emotions — hope, nervousness, relief, uncertainty. If you’re reading this, you’ve already made the hardest decision: choosing to invest in your healing. I want you to know that I see the courage it takes to reach out, especially when you’re dealing with complex trauma.

You don’t have to have it all figured out before we meet. My job is to create a safe space where you can begin to untangle what’s been happening and start to feel genuinely supported in your healing journey.

What to Expect in Our First Session

The first 50-60 minutes together will focus on:

  • Getting to know you — your current situation, what brought you here, and what you’re hoping to change
  • Understanding your patterns — how complex trauma might be showing up in your relationships, work, or daily life
  • Creating safety — helping your nervous system recognize that this is a different kind of space
  • Collaborative planning — discussing how my Whole-System Healing approach might work for your specific needs
  • Answering your questions — about the process, my approach, or anything else on your mind

You set the pace. We’ll only go as deep as feels comfortable, and you’re always in control of what you share and when.

How to Prepare (If You Want To)

There’s no required preparation, but some people find it helpful to:

  • Reflect on what you’re hoping to change — even if it’s just “I want to feel less overwhelmed”
  • Think about your main concerns — relationships, work stress, emotional overwhelm, etc.
  • Notice how you’re feeling before, during, and after our session
  • Remember there’s no “right” way to do therapy — just show up as you are

Practical Information

Now that you know what to expect, here are the logistics to help everything go smoothly:

Paperwork

Please review the information below and complete the intake forms prior to your first session. This saves us time and allows us to focus on what matters most — you.

Privacy & Confidentiality

I take your privacy seriously. What we discuss stays between us, with only a few situations where I’m legally required to share information:

  • If there’s risk of harm to you, someone else, or a vulnerable person
  • If you’re involved in a custody case and records are subpoenaed
  • If you ask me to coordinate care with another provider

I’ll always discuss these situations with you first and work to protect your privacy as much as possible.

Session Fees & Policies

Payment: Fees are discussed when you schedule and are due at the time of service. I accept cash, credit cards, and HSA/FSA cards.

Cancellations: If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 48 hours notice to avoid being charged the full session fee.

Late cancellations: If we’re unable to reschedule within the same week, or if you make a late cancellation, you’ll be charged the full session fee.

My commitment to you: I’ll do everything possible to accommodate your schedule and won’t charge unnecessarily. Life happens, and we’ll work together to find solutions when unexpected situations arise.

You're Not Alone in This

Many people feel uncertain about their first therapy session. That’s completely normal. My role is to help you feel as comfortable as possible while we begin this important work together.

Remember: You’ve already taken the most courageous step by deciding to prioritize your healing. I’m here to support you every step of the way.
